Onlooker delighted by woman in Tesco’s ‘pettiness’ after man didn’t say thank you

The unwritten rule to put a divider behind your shopping on the checkout conveyor belt as a courtesy to the customer behind you is a common occurrence in supermarkets across the country.

One woman’s pettiness to a fellow shopper who refused to acknowledge the gesture has left social media users reeling.

Amanda took to Twitter to share the bizarre interaction she witnessed in her local Tesco yesterday.

She said: “Woman in Tesco put a divider down on the conveyor belt for the man behind her at the checkout.

“He didn’t say thank you so she picked it up and put it back, that’s the level of pettiness I can absolutely get behind.”

The seemingly mundane tweet has garnered over 72,300 likes in less than 24 hours and commenters have shared their similar situations.

One user recalled shopping in Aldi, “and the man in front got annoyed at me for reaching for a divider. it’s common courtesy to put one down for the person behind you!”

Another said: “If someone doesn’t say thanks for that, I wait til their backs turned and try to hide it in the middle of their shopping. Childish? Who cares? Does cause some confusion though.”

While some people agreed that it was common courtesy to place the divider after your shopping, others were baffled

While others were baffled, claiming they never thought to thank the customer ahead for dividing their shopping.

One wrote: “I am SO polite if I do say so myself, but wouldn’t have ever thought to thank someone for this! Don’t we put the divider down behind our stuff for OURSELVES?”

Another added: “Huh? I have never ever come across anyone thanking anyone for this ever. Do I still thank the person if they put it down before I got to the check out?”

Another said: “I thought you put the divider down to signify the end of your shopping, not to do a favour for the next person? I’d always assumed it’s your job to do that, not the next person’s”

One user commented their weird habit when checking out: ”I like placing it horizontally behind my shopping. It freaks people out. They HAVE to re-position it,”

Another joked: “That’s nothing, have you tried standing it on end?”

While another user joked about using a different item as a makeshift divider: “If you really want to mess people up use cucumber divider.”

Someone replied in shock, saying: “Some people just want to watch the world burn!”
