Munster have been rocked by the news that RG Snyman has ruptured his ACL again.
Snyman was only three games into his comeback after he initially suffered the injury in August of last year, on his debut for the province, and after requiring skin graft surgery after a fire pit accident at the start of this summer.
The World Cup winning second row came off the bench for a third successive game on Sunday afternoon in the Reds’ impressive bonus point URC victory over Scarlets.
But there were concerns when Snyman departed just nine minutes after he was introduced and afterwards head coach Johann van Graan feared the 25-year-old had suffered a ‘significant’ injury.
Snyman has subsequently had a scan and his worst fears were confirmed. He will meet with the specialist next to discuss surgery and management.
“We are all hugely disappointed for RG,” said van Graan.
“After doing everything that was asked of him and working so hard to get back into great shape everyone feels for him right now.
“While this is a setback, we know RG is young and resilient given everything he has gone through in the last year so there is a strong sense of perspective here.
“We have seen what other world class players have done in this position before and they have come back to reach the successful heights of their careers and I would expect no different for someone of RG’s class and standing.”
