Holly Carpenter on ‘disappointment’ after missing out on Love Island following Maura Higgins’ huge success

Holly Carpenter admits she was disappointed after missing out on Love Island after Maura Higgins’ huge success but said she couldn’t have handled it.

The former Miss Ireland winner came close to becoming the nation’s next Irish star, after going for interviews and screen tests to be a contestant on the dating show last year.

She didn’t make the cut, which disappointed her at first, but the former Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model star now feels it may have been a blessing in disguise.

The model, who is now loved up with her boyfriend Jamie Hunt, told Irish Mirror: “It’s mad because I look back and I was fully in ITV doing the screen test and had gone through the interview process and I was so disappointed when I didn’t get the call..

“But then I’m just like I actually don’t think I could have handled it.

“A lot of them that come out talk about the mental health struggles they had and I just don’t think I would have been strong enough for it and it’s one of those things where it’s like you just don’t know what way your life could have gone and I definitely believe things happen for a reason.

“So even with anything when I’m really disappointed at the time I try to remind myself right, it’s grand.”

The 30-year-old star, who is often open with her fans about issues with her own mental health and body confidence throughout her career added: “It would be good to see those shows a bit more inclusive.

“I don’t know if some of those shows are a bit done to death anyway.”

The Dubliner, who boasts almost 100,000 followers on Instagram, said it also helps her to see others be honest about their own hang ups on the platform, after growing up comparing herself to top models and It Girls such as Kate Moss.”

She said this spurred her on to be more open about her own struggles, explaining: “I think it has helped me see other people do it..

“And I know some of it on Instagram can be a bit contrived. I feel like the whole ‘I love my cellulite thing’ and all that..

“But I don’t know, I just felt if it can hit home with anyone because I have gone up and down on the scales.

“I was really skinny for Britain’s Next Top Model and then obviously after I was like okay ‘now I can eat’ and then I was like I shouldn’t have been starving myself then.

“But I was born in 91 so I grew up with all the really skinny pop stars Kate Moss Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton now
