Five dead after SUV driven into Wisconsin Christmas parade

A least five people have been killed and 40 injured after an SUV was driven into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

An SUV vehicle hit dozens of people, including children, who were taking part in the parade on Sunday in Waukesha, Wisconsin which is about 30km west of Milwaukee.

Waukesha police chief Dan Thompson said a person of interest was in custody and the suspect vehicle had been recovered after the incident.

At least five people were killed and 40 people were injured, and the numbers could change, city authorities said in a statement late on Sunday.

A further police press conference is scheduled to take place on Monday.

A video posted online of the incident showed a red SUV crashing through the parade, appearing to run over more than a dozen people.

In a second video, police appeared to open fire on the vehicle as it crashed through street barriers.

Mr Thompson said an officer fired shots at the vehicle and no bystanders were injured.

News agencies reported that the car had struck at least 20 people including several youngsters waving pompoms and a group of “dancing grannies”.

Reuters reported that a woman had told Milwaukee’s Fox6 TV station that the SUV had hit a dance team of girls aged 9-15. The witness said the immediate reaction was silence, followed by screaming, running and checking on those injured.

One witness said the car had hit the “dancing grannies” and at least one person flipped over the hood of the SUV, according to Milwaukee’s WISN-TV, an ABC affiliate.

“Members of the group and volunteers were impacted and we are waiting for word on their conditions,” the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies said on their Facebook page. “Please keep the grannies, all those injured, and all those who witnessed this horrible event in your thoughts and prayers.”

Waukesha mayor Shawn Reilly said on Sunday: “Today our community faced horror and tragedy in what should have been a community celebration,”

Dance groups and high school bands and politicians were marching along Main Street in the Milwaukee suburb’s Christmas parade, which was returning from a pandemic hiatus, when the incident occurred.

Shortly before 4.40pm the driver of a red SUV stormed past barricades and drove through the crowd, striking dozens of people. Hospitals reported treating dozens of patients, including many children.

This was the 58th Christmas parade for Waukesha, an annual event that was cancelled last year because of the Covid pandemic.
