A first edition of the 1570 Atlas by Abraham Ortelius was the top lot at Fonsie Mealy’s Rare Books and Collectibles sale in Dublin last week.

The rarity with maps of America, Asia, Africa, Europe, Ireland and Britain made a hammer price of €96,000 over a top estimate of €60,000.

Described in the catalogue as “the atlas that changed the world”, it contains 53 double-page engraved maps.

Another highlight was an original engraved facsimile copy of the American Declaration of Independence issued by Order of Congress in 1823. Mealy’s copy has direct provenance by family descent to Charles O’Connor, the Irish-American Democratic lawyer who in 1872 became the first Catholic to be nominated for the US presidency. It made €48,000 at hammer over a top estimate of €30,000.

A walking stick gifted by Michael Collins to Patrick Baker in 1920 made €15,000.

A 19th-century walking stick gifted by Michael Collins to Patrick Baker of the Gresham Hotel in 1920 in gratitude for failing to identify him to British agents made €15,000. Mr Baker was subsequently head waiter at Jammets Restaurant and the lot included a letter and associated items, including a Jammets menu.

Full-size silver plate replicas of the Liam MacCarthy and Sam Maguire Cups sold for €9,000 each at hammer.

A 1915 All-Ireland football winners medal made €4,800 and a 1920 Bloody Sunday match ticket made €6,400.

An archive of the papers of Charles Doran, a Fenian who was clerk of works during the building of St Colman’s Cathedral, Cobh, until his death in 1909, made €11,500.
